Del Ray was one of the first suburbs of DC, and features breathtaking historical Victorian style single-family and art-deco duplex homes. While there are not any high-rise condos in the Del Ray neighborhood, some of the older buildings near the main shopping district have been redesigned recently as 5 and 6 unit condos, though they still have preserved the beautiful exteriors of the historical buildings.

As one of the first suburbs the the Nation's Capital, many historical figures of our government lived with their families in the area, and Del Ray still prides itself on being the perfect family-friendly small town that offers quick transportation to D.C. The eclectic, artistic vibe of Del Ray flows gently through the streets, from the small boutique specialty shops and lack of chain stores, to the preserved historical homes and meandering sidewalks. The majority of homes in the Del Ray area provide private parking with street parking being plentiful on both sides of the streets, as well as on main thoroughfares, such as Mount Vernon Avenue.  The Del Ray neighborhood provides quick transportation for residents and visitors through the blue and yellow Metro lines at the convenient Braddock Road Station, which is only a 15 minute walk from the heart of the Del Ray neighborhood. On beautiful days, many residents will enjoy the weather and friendly conversation by walking to the station.  From the station, a trip to the Gallery Place will only take about 20 minutes, so though the quaint atmosphere makes Del Ray feel worlds apart from the big city hustle and bustle of D.C, you can be just about anywhere you need for work, entertainment, culture or fun in under 30 minutes.

Del Ray seems to be the ultimate small town, because not only does it provide a safe, family friendly, close knit atmosphere to raise your family, but it also is convenient to all the rich history of our country's captial, as well as close to many desirable jobs, fantastic shopping and fine dining.

The first Thursday of every month is one that all residents enjoy, which is the locally owned and operated shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants all staying open later. Many unique street vendors come, and many of the local shop owners set up street galleries and sample vending, while residents are encouraged to browse around to take in local crafts, arts, performances and dining. Talented musicians play on street corners, and Barkley Square gives samples of some of the best doggie treats, so be sure to bring your four-legged friend down to enjoy the festivities on Main Street, also called "The Avenue", as well!

Places to Visit in Del Ray

The Dairy Godmother, located on Mount Vernon Avenue, is a local favorite and has been voted as the best place for Wisconsin-style frozen custard. The popular ice cream shop was also a stop for President Obama and his family when they visited Del Ray. After enjoying The Dairy Godmother's famous custards, a stop at St. Elmo's Coffee Shop- a must, their locally roasted coffees, unique and rich flavors, relaxing atmosphere and community involvement with local musicians, artists and more make St. Elmo's one of the most popular hang outs in Del Ray.

The Del Ray Farmer's Market is located at Mount Vernon and Oxford Avenues. It is held every Saturday from April until December and serves as a wonderful meeting place for residents to catch up with one another while buying the freshest locally grown fruits and vegetables.

The main street in Del Ray offers residents specialty food shops, yoga studios, gyms and coffee houses and homes are within easy walking distance, making life for residents reminiscent of a simpler time.

Outdoor Activities in Del Ray

Though a small town, Del Ray offers numerous outdoor activities for residents of all ages, from the many park locations, athletic fields, outdoor courts, dog parks, the City Marina, and open space, you will be sure to find the perfect outdoor spot for you.  There are also many community recreation centers that offer summer camps, aquatics, art, dance, martial arts, swimming lessons, music, fitness, as well as a wide range of sports for youth and adult teams. Del Ray is also a very walker and biker friendly neighborhood and there are many city biking and walking trail maps and other resources to enjoy the outdoor fitness you desire.

The Del Ray neighborhood is served by the Alexandria City Public Schools, including 3 high schools:

• T.C. Williams (grades 10-12)
• Secondary Training and Education Program (STEP)
• Minnie Howard School (grade 9)

There are two Middle Schools:

• Francis C. Hammond
• George Washington

There are also 13 elementary schools, as well as numerous Private and Parochial schools to choose for your family.
